Smarter energy use starts with what we already have

Oct 27, 2026 | News

Electrification is placing new demands on Sweden’s energy system. But the solution is not simply to generate more electricity or expand the power grid. According to Mattias Goldmann, Founder and CEO of the Swedish 2030-secretariat, we also need to make better use of the capacity and infrastructure we already have.

As society becomes increasingly electrified, the need for smart, flexible energy solutions continues to grow. For property owners, the challenge is to meet new demands while making efficient use of the capacity available. This was one of the key topics discussed when Zpark recently brought industry representatives together in Luleå to launch its new destination charger, PowerBay.

Existing infrastructure is an asset
– Zpark is doing something very important: making use of existing technology to help us move forward faster and more cost-effectively.

Making better use of existing infrastructure allows the transition to begin without requiring major investments in entirely new installations. By upgrading existing engine heater posts to support both EV charging and engine heating, property owners can adapt their parking facilities to meet new needs without having to replace the entire infrastructure.

The newly launched PowerBay is part of Zpark’s ongoing development of smart charging infrastructure, combining electric vehicle charging and engine heating in a single solution.

Smarter energy use creates shared benefits
For property owners, the future of charging infrastructure is not just about providing more charging points. It is also about being able to control, measure and monitor energy use.

With load balancing, individual metering and scheduling, charging and engine heating can be adapted to the specific conditions of each property. This provides greater control over energy consumption, makes it easier to allocate costs fairly and reduces the risk of high peak loads.

Swedish development and manufacturing strengthen security of supply
Electrification is not just about technology and capacity. It is also about long-term security and reducing dependence on global supply chains. Goldmann highlights the importance of choosing technology developed and manufactured close to its users, particularly at a time when trade disputes and tariffs can affect product availability.

– If you choose charging equipment from your local area, you don’t have to worry about tariffs and trade wars. It also makes it easy to pick up the phone, ask questions, get advice or even work together to accelerate the transition.

For Zpark, a strong local presence is central to its operations. With product development in Luleå and manufacturing in Haparanda, both expertise and production are located close to its customers.

By combining smarter use of existing infrastructure with technology developed in Sweden, Zpark demonstrates how electrification can be accelerated while contributing to a more flexible, resilient and sustainable energy system.
